Grand Palm Residents Light Up the Night with a Monthly Bike Ride

A full moon at Grand PalmDespite popular and persistent superstitions that people go crazy, pets freak out and appliances won’t work when the moon is full, none of these are true. What is real, however, is that full moons are beautiful, and residents of Grand Palm have created a wonderful way to fully appreciate them: the monthly Full Moon Bike Ride.

In March 2017, Grand Palm residents Jennifer Berlin and husband Frank Rubmin were inspired by a particularly beautiful Florida evening. They decided a bike ride through the community under the light of a full moon would be fun, so Jennifer sent out emails to other residents to invite them along.

The inaugural Full Moon Bike Ride attracted about 35 people, and the ride has been held every full moon since. The evening event continues to grow, with as many as 75 night riders participating.

“We are having a lot of fun organizing this and word is spreading. Everyone is having a great time and it is wonderful to see families riding with their children. All are welcome!” noted Frank.

Because they encourage participants to use bike lights, Jennifer suggested a Light Your Bike event with prizes for “Most Colorful,” “Most Creative and “Most Lights.” The couple approached Venice bike shop Real Bikes to see if they would give participants a bike light discount. The shop gladly stepped in, providing a 10% discount coupon for riders and supplying the prizes. Real Bikes store manager, Carl, even joined in for a ride.

Riding in search of the full moon at Grand PalmFull Moon Bike Riders meet at the Palm House parking lot at 7:45 p.m. Pre-ride fun includes snacks provided by Jennifer and Frank. The group then takes off for a ride through the community, returning to the Palm House parking lot to complete the evening.

Due to popular demand, the length of the ride has been extended to about 45 minutes, although how long individual riders stay to ride is up to them. Those who don’t join the ride often become part of the growing number of people gathered to watch the “parade”.

Full moon riders from Grand PalmThe next Full Moon Bike Ride is scheduled for Sunday, August 6th, and all are welcome to join. Participants should wear a helmet and have front and rear bike lights. While special contests or themes don’t happen at every ride, Frank and Jennifer are considering throwing a Halloween costume in the fall.
